Companies Have Already Started Firing!

A friend of mine shot me an email earlier... not only has he lost EVERYTHING he owns in one of the flooded neighborgoods of New Orleans, but he just found out today that he has been fired from his law firm.

If anybody else has heard of companies firing residents of Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama please send me an email with whatever verification you may have and I will post a hall of shame post with links to their websites. (My buddy asked me not to post the firms name.)

As I said in a previous post, I know that several pharmaceutical companies are "reevaluating" their territories and may be laying off shortly.

This is outrageous behavior and must be stopped. It has only been eight days.

Something to keep in mind regarding the firings. Note - people will be elegible for Workers Compensation when they have offically been let go or fired. If they don not take this step then they could not go fill out the forms necessary to get their Workers Comp benefits kicked in so they can recieve checks. Just thought I'd let you know that info. Hang Tough New Orleans- - we'll all be back for Jazz Fest before ya know it!! :)

saw some big shot from Harrah's on the tube, said all their casino workers would be paid for 90 days no question(that's the way I remember it).Said they would rebuild, and would soon establish temporary business quarters.

I'm not sure you understand what's happening. You should have expected all these businesses to pull out. It's the only way many of them can survive. Go look in your history books. This same type of situation hit Galveston way back when... the city has never returned to normal. All of the residents moved to Houston and setup a new life. I don't know how many people from NOLA I have talked to here in Houston that say they are not going back. The goverment is about to ship them to states all over the US. Baton Rouge has become a war zone because of all those people. Ya'll would get more respect from people if ya'll would stop asking "what are you going to do for me?" It's getting childish. But then again that's the whole attitude of everyone in LA. Live of the government! It's the way to really enjoy life...

You keep talking about NOLA being this great city but why are they being arrested by the hundreds? Refugee's are breaking into cars and hijacking our cars. Thanks be to our President and Texas Gov. Perry. They had to step in and take control from your Gov. because she didn't know what she was doing, and give your dumb Mayor a quick lesson on using the phone. Your Govenor has the right to activate the troops in her state, did she? NO. The President had to.. and did your Mayor ask for help immediately like he should have? NO. He just expected these people to show up.

I know that Kmart had their managers and assistants return to just south of Metarie to get the stores up and running. They were originally told that Kmart would pay for 1 night accommodations, but that anything after that was up to them. Once they arrived they found out that they had NO accommodations.

They have no problem working for the company they have stood behind during bankruptcy and so on, but with many of these workers having lost most or all of what they own, you would think that Kmart would help the workers to help the company. After all, if they didn't return to help the store where would Kmart be?

Hey Average,

You are an average dumbass.

Put a Cat 4 on top of Houston and see what happens. I guess you have no poor and no criminals in your fair city.

Go fuck yourself.

Unless they dropped a brick on their foot at work, a laid off worker won't be eligible for 'workman's comp.'

I think you mean "Unemployment" This is something altogether different. If you worked for a company which is totally within the destruction and is closed as a result... then it might be OK to move people to unemployment. If you work for a firm with even one office outside of NO - you're a jackass fof firing (laying off) the displaced workers.

Hey Average Taxpayer,

If you're going to spread those lies and bullshit, then have the guts to sign your post.

I have seen some idiotic comments, but that one is the stupidest, most crass thing I think I have ever heard.

SIGNED,

I don't have a blog nor do I care to give a name. What's the point?

I've also seen the transcripts from your Mayor's interviews. The man has no understanding of business or politics. If he did he wouldn't be upset and help would have been there the morning after the storm hit.

If a CAT 4 hit Houston?
First off there would not be the same amount of flooding. That's a city isn't built in an area sure to flood.

Include the Royal Sonesta on your list of shame! They are not paying employees for hours worked. They are, however, offering to lend small sums. Can you believe that!

Houston is sinking (land retracting below sea level) faster than New Orleans is/was.

The federal Department of Labor web site has information on how to file for unemployment compensation if you were displaced. Unfortunately, there will be local businesses that will have to close up, and can't offer wage and benefits continuation. However, any of the Fortune 1000 companies should not be pulling the plug at this time. I will definately choose not to do business with those that cut off their employees' paychecks and benefits this soon after the disaster.

It would be interesting to know where you heard Houston was sinking? EVERYTHING is sinking to some degree.. the world changes, even home sweet home in Kansas is sinking. Now you are right that Galveston is having issues with sinking and soon to become a real issue. However there's no report on Houston that I know of.

http://www.rense.com/general67/notabout.htm

The writer of the above article has an interesting point of view. Having been to Louisiana and been near these people this article is so true. NOT as a blanket, I'm not saying everyone is like this but they are the majority.

Then.. again this mayor needs to resign and escape before he makes himself look like a COMPLETE idiot. Some are asking for New York's past mayor to come and run the city since he can't seem to do it.

"Average US Taxpayer" is an idiot. Please don't measure all Houstonians/Texans against this moron. I am in Houston, and we are happy to help. I have yet to hear about people from LA carjacking anyone or stealing cars, or any other crime for that matter other than drunk & disorderly, or other minor infractions that should be expected in this sort of situation - and that has been limited to less than 50 people. I have not heard about a "war zone" anywhere, including Baton Rouge. Get a grip.
On another note - thanks for the postings regarding the New Orleans area. It puts a lot of things in perspective. Hope you are well, and continue to be...

I am truly sorry for the plight of the people in New Orleans and the surround areas. I am also sorry that there are foolish people who are moronic enough to blame everyone EXCEPT our "good" President Bush. This tragedy was a colossal clusterf*ck by all levels of government, Democrats and Republicans.

Yeah you're right all levels of government. But umm 95% of the blame should go to the Mayor and Govenor...

I am so sorry for your friend. If that law firm was so rotten to do that to your friend, maybe it's best to get out anyway. Hopefully this will be the start of something better.

Susan,

Do you care to retract your statements now? Contact Mayor White, HPD, Harris County Sheriff's Dept. and surrounding areas and they all confirm that some of the low life NOLA people are committing crimes at a record level! I am not saying all NOLA people are bad, but even speaking to one of them at work the other day confirmed that there are so many of the Nola people who are causing MAJOR PROBLEMS In the State of Texas. She went on to say these are the ones who have given the Law abiding, hard working NOLA people a bad name! She said it is just ridiculous that some of these NOLA people prior to coming to Texas weren't employed beforehand, never held a job, yet had their hands out for whatever they could get, plus spent it on items that weren't necessities. She also said that she didn't want to just remain in a hotel, that she wanted to get out there and work so that she and her family could seek a stable residence, not milk the system for all it is worth! Her definition of these types of LOW-LIFE SCUM! I wholeheartedly agree with her! Any person for that matter who does this is SCUM no matter what City or state they are from!
